Succeed With This One Career Tool

What is Your Elevator Pitch?

An elevator pitch is the pathway that leads to your competitive advantage and opportunities and is a tool you need in your career portfolio.  An elevator pitch that aligns with your values helps you summarize your mission in less than 20 seconds.  You can use your elevator pitch for:

  • Networking

  • Improving your LinkedIn Profile and Resume

  • Speaker Opportunities

  • Anytime you tell someone what you do

Working on an elevator pitch to help promote your superpowers is worth your time. It can often be a lifeline, allowing you to hold conversation space at any gathering. And yes, you can change your elevator pitch as your mission changes. Your elevator pitch will be part of the tools in your career portfolio, helping you set yourself apart from the competition to connect the dots in your career story based on your career experiences and objectives.  Here are areas to consider when creating your elevator pitch:

  • Assess your passion/natural talents, motivations, and gifts.

  • Identify your skill sets.

  • Pinpoint what makes you happy.

  • Write a mission statement that shows your purpose.

Here is an example of my mission statement:

I am passionate about helping others succeed.  I am optimistic and a natural encourager. I value communication and continuous learning.

I arrived at this definition by defining my values, assessing my skills, and identifying what delights me.

Here is an example of my elevator pitch as a career coach:

I aim to help clients define success to experience their values and desired career goals.

Another example:

I help job seekers create resumes and career strategies to attract their desired job.

Would you be willing to establish your Career Mission?

Set your intention and get started by asking yourself these sample questions:

  • What do you love to do?

  • What do you think of all the time?

  • If you could do anything you wanted and knew you could make a living, what would that be?

  • What do others say you are good at?

Based on your answers, start working on your mission statement. Then, use excerpts from your statement to create an elevator pitch. Practice your pitch so that it comes naturally to you when you share your mission with others.
