Career Reskilling and Upskilling at Any Age

Career reskilling and upskilling have become the norm as we embrace the changing landscape of work and technology beyond the pandemic. Moving up in your career means continuously assessing your skill set at any age. Reskilling and upskilling are tools to include as part of your career strategy. Below are the areas I continue to consider when I think about reskilling and upskilling:

Job Personality: What job roles interest you? Whether you want to be a leader or an individual contributor,  you must know how to lead yourself and be self-organized to be successful. Your skill set will take you far in your career, and it is the fuel for your productivity.

Learning Experiences: What experiences do you care about, and what job roles will they lead to? If you are in the technology space and plan to remain in this space, then you already know that things change at the speed of light. That means you must have an agile plan to pivot. Set your intention to document your challenges and successes on your reskilling and upskilling journey to stay aligned with your career goals.

Build Your Community: This effort must be continuous and strategic for both your network at work and your professional network outside of work. Keep in mind that your skills will only get you so far. Focus on building your community as you gather more knowledge. As they say, the network you build determines your net worth, so be thoughtful and strategic about your career goals. Build a community with like-minded people. Connect with people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and job roles within your field. Engage and give back to also show your value.

Have the Conversation: Now that you’ve decided on what job roles you want to pursue, your reskilling and upskilling strategy, and your targeted communities, you must be intentional about what conversations you will have and who you will have those conversations with to move along your career path. Don’t take your networking associations for granted. Start targeted online and offline discussions about your intent, gain insights on opportunities, ask for sponsorship, and create an ongoing process to evaluate and assess your current state.

Career reskilling and upskilling add credit to your work, which should be applied to practical job experiences to meet the goals for which you obtained the skills.
